Equipment

Ingredients

  • 8 vegan hot dogs (I used Lightlife. Any brand would work just as well)
  • 1 whole wheat puff pastry sheet (or storebought puff pastry sheet, approx 250 grams)

For brushing, for a deeper golden color (optional)

Instructions

  • Place the hot dogs in boiling water and let them cook for five minutes. Remove to a plate lined with paper napkins or a rack to cool and dry.
  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cut the puff pastry sheet into long, thin strips, about a centimeter wide.
  • Wind the puff pastry strips around each hot dog, leaving some room near the "head" to make the eyes. There is no perfect skill to this, just have fun--it's a great project to enlist your kids to help with.
  • Place the hot dog mummies on a baking sheet. Brush on the optional maple-milk-oil mixture if using. Bake 20 minutes or until golden-brown and crispy. You might need less time if you use puff pastry sheets made with white flour. In that case start checking after about 12 minutes.
  • Use vegan mayo or mustard to make tiny eyes on each mummy. Serve!
