Vegan Barbecue Sauce
This vegan barbecue sauce has a bold, smoky flavor profile with notes of tangy, sweet, salty and spicy. It's better than a bottled version that also may not be vegan, and it takes just minutes to make.

- 6 oz tomato paste
- 1 cup water
- ¼ cup sugar (or maple syrup)
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (use tamari for a gluten-free bbq sauce)
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce (like Sriracha sauce or any hot sauce you have around. Use less for a less spicy flavor profile.)
- 1 teaspoon salt
Place the tomato paste in a saucepan with the water. Whisk until there are no lumps and the sauce is smooth. Add all the remaining ingredients.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil.
Turn heat down to medium low and cook the bbq sauce about 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until it has reduced and thickened. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
